ALT Software to Deliver an Integrated Reference Design Kit for Wind River’s DO-178B and ED-12B Certified IMA Platforms

Turnkey avionics reference platform lowers design and development time with RTCA DO-178B and EUROCAE ED-12B certified avionics projects.

Toronto, Canada — April 27, 2009 - ALT Software, a worldwide supplier of safety-critical 2D/3D advanced graphics software and development services, today announced the availability of an integrated reference design kit for DO-178B and ED-12B certified Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) systems, called the “ALT Software DO-178B Reference Design Kit for VxWorks 653”. This integrated platform combines the certification software and hardware components specifically designed for developing IMA systems using COTS components.

This reference design kit uses a Wind River PowerPC 7457-based single board computer and a GE Fanuc G2 graphics card as its hardware foundation. It also contains integrated versions of ALT’s DO-178B OpenGL Libraries and Wind River’s VxWorks 653 Platform. . The VxWorks 653 Platform includes Wind River’s Eclipse-based Workbench development environment, complete with an intuitive build framework that enables developers to use this reference platform to build and benchmark their IMA applications on VxWorks 653, using the ALT DO-178B OpenGL Libraries as required for their graphics applications.

This platform also includes an XML-to-binary compiler qualified as a development tool under FAA and DO-178B guidelines. Complete RTCA DO-178B and EUROCAE ED-12B Level A COTS certification evidence is available for the VxWorks 653 runtime and qualified development tools.

Additionally, ALT’s DO-178B OpenGL graphic driver has been certified to DO-178B Level A, and is fully customizable for specific customer requirements, including advanced hardware acceleration capabilities such as GPU caching of texture and geometry data for increased performance, a state optimized rendering pipeline, and static memory management for deterministic usage of the GPU.

“In this competitive market, aerospace companies are faced with the challenge of reducing research and development costs involved with the certification of Integrated Modular Avionics applications," said Dan Joncas, vice president of sales at ALT Software. “This technology integration between ALT Software and Wind River offers customers the ability to jumpstart their DO-178B and ED-12B certification projects, by allowing them to begin development on the market-leading ARINC 653 platform and a proven OpenGL stack with a history of certification, the very first day the reference design kit is received.”

“Used in major programs around the world, Wind River’s VxWorks 653 Platform is a proven, market-leading platform for Integrated Modular Avionics,” said Rob Hoffman, vice president and general manager for Aerospace and Defense at Wind River.“ The integration of ALT Software’s DO-178B OpenGL technologies on the VxWorks 653 Platform in this reference design kit produces a ready solution for our customers with tight deadlines for developing safety-critical avionics systems.”

The reference design kit includes:

  • Wind River VxWorks 653 Platform 2.2, including Wind River Workbench 2.6.1 (30-day evaluation license)
  • Project centric, pre-defined build framework for ease of development and testing
  • ALT Software OpenGL DO-178B software stack (30-day license)
  • Quantum3D IData Avionics HMI demo
  • Wind River SBC7457 Single Board Computer
  • Board support package for MPC7457 PowerPC-based single board computer
  • GE Fanuc G2 graphics card and one output riser card with integrated graphics drivers
