ALT Software brings next-generation 2D/3D graphics to hard real time embedded applications in aerospace, defense, and other system-critical embedded systems

Embedded graphics software leader provides exclusive support for OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics libraries for Green Hills Software’s safe and secure INTEGRITY Operating System.

TORONTO, Canada - October 20th, 2009
- ALT Software, an industry leading producer of 2D/3D graphics device drivers for aerospace and defense systems, has integrated its OpenGL ES 2.0 embedded graphics device drivers with the INTEGRITY real-time operating system (RTOS) from Green Hills Software. OpenGL is the standard graphics API used in many of today’s computing systems. OpenGL ES 2.0 is an embedded subset of OpenGL defined by the Khronos Group for use in all manner of embedded systems, including mobile, industrial, automotive, medical and aerospace applications. OpenGL ES 2.0 enables these applications to leverage advanced capabilities of modern GPUs.

“INTEGRITY’s modern architecture was designed to meet the demanding performance and reliability requirements of mission-critical systems,” said Dan Mender, Vice-President of Business Development at Green Hills. “ALT’s graphics drivers are proven in many of the world’s modern military and commercial aircraft, so they were a natural choice for expanding our embedded graphics solutions for INTEGRITY. The combination of INTEGRITY with this new driver is ideal for system architects and OpenGL software developers incorporating advanced 2D/3D graphics into system-critical product displays.”

“OpenGL ES 2.0 represents a leap in graphics rendering technology that offers key benefits to hard real-time OS users”, said Mark Snyder, ALT’s VP of Product Development. “By adding support for OpenGL ES Shader Language, high performance configurable rendering can be used to enhance sensor fusion, situational awareness, HMI user friendliness, and operator awareness. ALT’s OpenGL ES 2.0 drivers are small footprint and enable hard real-time RTOS users to combine their traditional OpenGL HMI applications with these new features. Both system developers and end users stand to benefit.”

ALT’s OpenGL ES 2.0 solution is designed to offer an evolutionary path to new capabilities and new GPU choices for hard-real time graphics users. Modern-generation GPUs are designed around programmability. They offer great flexibility but are not designed to support the kind of safety-critical real-time use that legacy OpenGL applications require. ALT’s OpenGL ES 2.0 solution is designed to offer a clear integration path for these critical applications to work deterministically, correctly, and safely while leveraging new capabilities offered by OpenGL ES 2.0. With its safety critical system’s expertise and its experience with GPUs from multiple vendors, ALT Software is uniquely positioned to address this key market need.
